At home in Yellowknife
Meet Jeremy.
I moved to Yellowknife in 2010 after graduating from the University of Exeter in my native England with a degree in political science. I live in the heart of downtown with my partner and our two children, who attend École Įtłʼǫ̀.
You might know me as the former co-owner and chef at the Fat Fox Café. Running a small business downtown, and trying to find it a new home, taught me a great deal about the opportunities and challenges facing our city.
Since 2021, I’ve worked in business development for a local architecture and engineering consultancy, supporting projects for governments, developers, homeowners, businesses, and non-profits. My earlier work included research and communications with Ecology North, the NWT Literacy Council, and the GNWT.
I’m also a keen musician and an advocate for electoral reform, serving on Fair Vote Canada’s national board. I care deeply about pluralism, empathy, and democracy, and about making our city a place where people can build a good life.
Specific commitments
My priorities.
I’m keeping my platform clear and specific so residents know what I’ll work towards, and can hold me accountable for making progress.
Housing and development
Work with council and administration to make development approvals, land transfers, and appeals more transparent and efficient. Give homeowners and professional developers clearer guidance and greater confidence to invest, while improving opportunities for constructive public input.
A downtown people use
Support street-level retail and welcoming, multiuse public spaces, including spaces like the parklet outside Barren Ground Coffee. Insist that larger downtown developments meet their applicable obligations to provide genuine street-level retail space.
City spending that supports local businesses
Update procurement policy to give greater weight to the local economic benefits of city spending. Encourage companies doing business in Yellowknife to establish and maintain a permanent physical presence here.
Safe walking and cycling
Advance bike lanes and other active transportation infrastructure, building on the recommendations in the city’s latest transportation plan. Make gradual, practical improvements that help people move around our city safely.
Space for arts and performance
Pursue federal and other outside funding for a dedicated performing arts facility and related programming. Support the NWT Arts Centre initiative and look for opportunities to expand arts programming through existing city spaces and services.
An accessible local democracy
Work with schools and community groups to encourage participation in city democracy and help people learn about our institutions. Be an approachable public servant who welcomes thoughtful feedback and works constructively with fellow councillors.
Paying for our city’s future.
Yellowknife faces a serious infrastructure funding shortfall. There is no quick fix, and our commitments need realistic, properly costed plans.
I want us to support home construction and affordability so people on a range of incomes can thrive here, and our tax base can grow. We should also pursue outside capital funding for building upgrades that reduce operating and energy costs.
We need to be honest about the trade-offs while making a clear case for investment in a city that people want to call home.

Endorsements.
“I support Jeremy’s vision for a downtown full of local businesses, arts, and welcoming public spaces. Having run the Fat Fox, he understands both the potential and the challenges of building something downtown. I’d be glad to see that experience and commitment at the council table.”
“I had decided to stay out of this election. This endorsement is my one exception. There are other candidates who I support too, but Jeremy is someone standing by his long standing position not to use traditional social media like FB. If this endorsement helps further his message a bit, I am in. I know how hard working Jeremy is. I know his values and his desire for a city built for people first mesh with my own. While I won't be at Council next term I will be proud if Jeremy is.”
“I've seen firsthand how lack of clarity from the City has delayed and increased costs on construction projects. I'm excited to see how Jeremy's achievable, policy-based solutions could improve the process for building in Yellowknife.”
“I am voting for Jeremy because of his passion for wanting to make Yellowknife a better place, and his holistic political vision of how to make this a reality. I really appreciate how approachable Jeremy is, and willing to not only listen to concerns, but has great ideas on how to address them.”
“As a local business owner, I know how much small businesses and the arts contribute to the heart of the Yellowknife community. I’m supporting Jeremy Flatt because his commitment to strengthening local businesses and creating more opportunities for the arts reflects the kind of Yellowknife I am proud to be a part of.”
“I will be voting for Jeremy because he is passionate about the health of our democracy and the meaningful involvement of people from all walks of life in the decisions of our governments.”
"Jeremy is the best combination of smart, creative and kind. He goes out of his way to help people, he works hard to bring his creative visions to life, and he is an all around great person. He has my vote! I can’t wait to see what he brings to council!"
